I don’t know about you, but I sometimes struggle to pick out paint colors. I mean, I usually know the look that I want. But finding the right paint color to fit the ideas in my head is sometimes a maddening mess. Since starting my blog, I have really begun to visually dissect Joanna’s designs that we all know and love. From watching the show, I’ve noticed that she likes to use certain  Fixer Upper paint colors over and over again. Which means, if they work for her – they more than likely will work for me too! (but I recommend to always, always, always get some samples to try out in your own space – as paint colors can look totally different depending on lighting and other undertones in the room.)

DISCLAIMER: This blog is not affiliated with Fixer Upper or Magnolia in any way. Opinions are entirely mine and do not represent an endorsement by Joanna Gaines.

The Most Popular Fixer Upper Paint Colors

2018 UPDATE: Since first publishing this post back in 2016, I’ve updated it and have also been asked to remove certain images. It seems I am no longer allowed to post pics from HGTV or Magnolia – bummer 🙁 I have used some of my own pics instead which show the colors, and I’ve replaced pics with links so you can still get an idea of which episode/house I was referencing.

So here are the most popular Fixer Upper paint colors of all time:

1. Sherwin Williams – Alabaster

my favorite Fixer Upper paint colors - #paint | The Harper House

Joanna painted the main living areas of her own farmhouse Alabaster and she continually uses it in homes she designs on Fixer Upper as well. It’s a great color to use on walls and trim both. We painted the shiplap in Mouse House this color. You can see the progress post here and take a look at our fixer upper kitchen reveal here.

And see all the kitchen details here.

2. Sherwin Williams – Silver Strand

favorite Fixer Upper paint colors - #paint | The Harper House

This gorgeous muted gray/green is Joanna’s go to color for interior walls in many of the homes she’s filmed on Fixer Upper. It is a lovely neutral when paired with white trim and her signature hardwood floors. We used Silver Strand in the mudroom at Mouse House – see the full reveal of the Mudroom here.

3. Sherwin Williams – Oyster Bay

favorite Fixer Upper paint colors - #paint | The Harper House

Oyster Bay is another lovely greenish blue color with a bit more intensity than Silver Strand. Joanna loves to use this color on built-ins that need a little more contrast and it makes for a fantastic color for bedrooms and baths as well.

You can see Oyster Bay on the bedroom walls of the West Story episode.

4. Sherwin Williams – Repose Gray

favorite Fixer Upper paint colors - #paint | The Harper House

Repose Gray is a softer feeling gray with taupe undertones. It doesn’t fall in the warm or cool categories, but somewhere in the middle. It’s a very nice all around gray – not too dark and not too light.

See pictures of Repose Gray in the House of Symmetry episode.

5. Sherwin Williams – Mindful Gray

favorite Fixer Upper paint colors - #paint | The Harper House

And finally we have Mindful Gray. I like to think of it as Repose Gray’s deeper darker older sister 🙂 Looks beautiful with white wainscoting (or SHIPLAP!)

See examples of Mindful Gray in the living room of the Gatecrest house.

A few more favorites for 2021:

Benjamin Moore Lakeshore Green

2018 paint trends, favorite fixer upper paint colors, modern farmhouse paint colors, best blue paint colors | theharperhouse.com

Barn door in Mouse House is BM Lakeshore Green

BM Lakeshore Green is a pretty bluish green color reminiscent of the haint blue colors found on porch ceilings a hundred years ago. I had the paint guys mix it at 50% which gives it a softer more muted look. See more pics of this door in our flip house kitchen reveal.

Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze

2018 paint trends, favorite fixer upper paint colors, modern farmhouse paint colors, best black paint colors | theharperhouse.com

SW Urbane Bronze at 150%

It’s always good to have a go-to black and Urbane Bronze from Sherwin Williams is definitely one of my favorites! It has brown undertones which gives it a nice rich depth, perfect for doors and shutters. I had the guys mix this at 150% to increase the richness a bit. (For info on where to find door knobs for your whole house – check out this post.)

Benjamin Moore Fieldstone

2018 paint trends, favorite fixer upper paint colors, modern farmhouse paint colors, best gray paint colors | theharperhouse.com

stove hood: BM Fieldstone | Shiplap: SW Alabaster

And finally, we have BM Fieldstone which we used on the stove hood of Mouse House – see the full kitchen post here.  It’s a great light french gray with no blue or purple undertones. Looks beautiful on kitchen cabinets too!

(You can make a similar Give Thanks sign too – full tutorial in this post.)

I hope this roundup of the most popular Fixer Upper paint colors has been helpful! I really think you can’t go wrong with any of these. Just remember to get some samples up in your space before jumping in to start painting! I may or may not know this from experience, but husbands do not like you changing your mind after they’ve already painted half the room… ahem.  😉

And be sure to visit my other popular post to see the best white paint colors for SHIPLAP!

And speaking of shiplap, how cute are these shirts? You can find this one and tons more in my new Etsy shop! These make great gifts for your Fixer Upper friends or wear one to the Silos!  🙂

**check out what I just found on AMAZON! I am loving all their farmhousey decor lately, and they usually ship super fast too!

Do you know what color trim paint would go with Alabaster. I am thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets and the trim with Alabaster walls. Thank you!

          • theharperhouse says: June 29, 2017 at 9:57 AM

Hi Lora, we used Benjamin Moore White Dove in semi gloss for the trim in our flip house and Alabaster walls. Another good trim color is Benjamin Moore Simply White. Always get sample colors first though to test out in your space – good luck!

Do you know what color the trim and wall colors Joanna used in S3 Ep 11 The modern ranch?

          • Christy Harper says: July 2, 2020 at 9:54 AM

Hi there, I don’t know the exact color used on the cabinets but it looks like Knoxville Gray or Gentleman’s Gray (both Benjamin Moore) might give you a similar look.

          • Kelly says: October 3, 2020 at 1:44 PM

Hi! love your style! I have just painted my kitchen cabinets SW pure white. I also painted the ship lap above them Pure White. Do you think SW Alabaster or BM white Dove would look good on walls in kitchen and family room (its all one large room). Thanks

          • Christy Harper says: October 20, 2020 at 9:15 AM

Thanks so much for reading Kelly! Yes, I think either color would work well 🙂 They both will be a tad warmer than the pure white, but I’d still recommend getting a sample first just to make sure. Good luck!

sure, I think it would look great. Just always get a sample first to make sure it works with your lighting conditions and other undertones in the room 🙂

Hi Shannon, we just use regular “ceiling white” pre-mixed from big box stores since it’s much cheaper. We got ours at Menards but Home Depot & Lowes carry ceiling paint too. Good luck with your project!

I have been trying for 2-3 years to choose 3 colors… a white for my cupboards, and 2 grays… 1 for my walls and 1 for my wainscoting. I am extremely indecisive! Can you please throw 3 at me?? I know I want these colors, but can’t choose.

We were repainting our entire home as their show started and I had already gone towards the grays, soft gray blues and soft blue greens. I am thrilled with our results.

Hi Jamie – she used mostly her own paint colors (from her new Magnolia Line) in Season Three. But I was able to confirm that the living room walls for the Brick House are Clean Slate from her Magnolia line – https://shop.magnoliamarket.com/products/clean-slate. The picture is a little deceiving as it’s picking up the blue undertones from the lighting. A nice color match for you to try would be Benjamin Moore Comfort Gray or Oyster Bay. We used Comfort Gray in our current flip house and it looks lovely with the white trime (BM White Dove)

      • Christy Harper says: September 28, 2019 at 9:24 AM

You definitely can use Alabaster on the ceilings too, however we always use the much cheaper basic ‘ceiling white’ or whatever from the big box stores. It’s just a basic white and covers well and doesn’t cost as much as the name brand paints 🙂 good luck!

Here is another option from HOME DEPOT (although I’m not sure if you can add grilles to this version)

Hope this helps and good luck with your search!

I personally am really loving the nice warm whites, so I would go with Alabaster. That is what we are planning on painting all the shiplap in our flip house that we’re working on. But if you prefer a little bit of color, try Silver Sand or Repose Gray. Good luck!

We just painted our entire living space, Alabaster with SW Pure White ceilings. We also did the new 5″ baseboards in Alabaster but used a satin. Our painter does a lot of painting in downtown Las Vegas and he says that the design trend is to use the same color on the walls and baseboards, but different finishes. The outcome is beautiful. The walls and baseboards look amazing! I couldn’t be happier with the color. Regardless of the lighting, the color is awesome! Good luck!

hmmm, I looked on Home Depot’s website and I don’t see Joanna’s new line? Is that what you’re referring to? I do know that big box stores can color match paints if you bring in a sample of the color. However, in my experience with doing this – it’s not always an *exact* match. But if you’re fine with a color that’s close enough – go for it!

Hi Rachel – thanks so much for stopping by! If you have a swatch or fan deck from Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore, you can take that in to Lowes, Home Depot, Menards (or any paint store) and then can scan that swatch and do a color match for you. Otherwise, if you don’t have a physical sample for them to match and the color is not in their system yet, you will need to purchase the paint directly from a Sherwin Williams store or Benjamin Moore affiliate store. The stores that carry Benjamin Moore in my town are Farm & Fleet and a Do It Best Hardware store. I’ve heard that some furniture stores that carry Joanna’s line will be stocking her paint also, so you might want to call ahead if that’s the paint you’re looking for 🙂 Hope this helps!

I love this list of colors and all the additional info you provided, thank you! My favorite colors were from the Nut House, which is pictured above using silver strand. I’ve been trying to find the name of the color from the master bedroom and I can’t find it listed anywhere. Any ideas on where I can find that?

I love watching fixer upper. she has good taste. I have built a lot of homes, not for me but other people and the gray color has been used for years. When I first saw it it was Galvaston gray in a “Home for the holidays” house that was up for drawing in Lafayette LA. That was in the early 90’s so it’s not a new thing. I dont think I’ll pay that much for Jo’s paint especially since I know the colors and now you can match paint with any brand.

She also posts the colors on Instagram and Facebook sometimes, so you can go through old posts to get info. My friend Sherri also has a Fixer Upper group on FB where she shares lots of paint colors. Hi Steve, I don’t know the exact color she used – however, it looks similar to Rainy Days or Sir Drake from her new line: https://shop.magnoliamarket.com/collections/colors. A good color match for those is Benjamin Moore Silver Mink and Atmospheric. I recommend getting a few samples to try out on your home first as colors always look different based on lighting and other factors. We actually just repainted the exterior brick of our flip house about a month ago. Prep work is key…you need to power wash everything before priming. We used Sherwin Williams Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer and are very happy with the results (here’s a link: http://bit.ly/2bjy0Si). I am hoping to write a post with more tips and final pictures soon. Thanks for stopping by!

You really can’t go wrong with any of the colors I talked about in this post. Repose gray is a nice light gray that would work with most colors of furniture and floors. I’ve also used Silver Strand several times in my own homes and love it. Without seeing your actual space, I can’t really tell you what to use. Your best bet is to just go to the store and purchase a few samples and paint them on some poster board to see what they’ll look like in your own space with your furniture, flooring, and lighting conditions in the space. Good luck!

If you were using Alabaster as your wall color would you use that for your trim and doors as well or choose something like simply white for trim and doors? I have a very open floor plan for my kitchen, dining and great room with vaulted ceilings and a lot of natural light. Thinking I could do alabaster for all the walls, trim and doors (minus pantry doors which will be a gray to match the island). Any suggestions on this?

Also, planning to do my kids rooms with the silver strand. Do you know if Joanna uses alabaster for her ceiling, trim and doors in her kids rooms with the silver strand on the walls?

Thank you for all your recommendations on paint colors.

        • theharperhouse says: November 2, 2016 at 8:26 AM

Hi Tisha, you could definitely use Alabaster as your trim and door color as well as wall color. However, that will give you a more monochromatic look, but it’s still very pretty in my opinion. In looking at Joanna’s farmhouse, I can’t really tell if her trim is a different color so she may have went with Alabaster on her trim as well (I can’t confirm that though). We chose Alabaster for our flip house walls and BM White Dove for the trim and doors. It’s a very slight difference, but still nice. Simply White would look amazing too – you just need to decide if you want contrast between your trim and wall or if you’d like them to all blend together.

I was unable to find the color Joanna used on her kids’ ceiling, but in our flip house we just used “ceiling white in flat” from our local big box store (Menards). And for our laundry room we used Silver Strand with BM White Dove for trim & doors. Hope this helps! Thanks for reading 🙂

Also, we recently painted our flip house Intellectual Gray by Sherwin Williams and it looks great! It’s a good light taupe-ish gray with warm undertones. We painted the shutters & front door SW Urbane Bronze (increased color to 150% – basically just making it a little more intense) which is a nice warm rich black. And I love love love it! The Oyster Bay is a lovely color as well – we actually just painted our Rec Room that color and I love it (looks especially nice w/ White Dove trim!)

Great! Thanks so much. I was actually looking at the Sherwin Williams pallette online last night and comparing against gallery pictures online of the Beachum house. I am thinking the colors are close to the color strip of SW 9144 Moonmist to SW 9150 Endless Sea. The living room is close to SW 9149 Inky Blue and the entrance and kitchen/dining somewhere near SW 9146 Faded Flaxflower to SW 9147 Favorite Jeans. What do you think? My builder is giving me one coat of one color through the entire interior and I chose SW 9014 Eider White for a hint of gray in order to avoid bright white walls to start. Using no VOC paint as well!

Hey Joe – sorry, I wasn’t able to track down the exact color Joanna used in the Beachum house 🙁 It looks like she is under contractual obligation with her new paint line and is unable to release any info? Which seems weird because everyone would want to use it if she could just share the color! From my monitor the color looks blue with green undertones and I’m afraid the paint strip you chose (moonmist, etc..) may lean more towards the blue/periwinkle side. I would recommend the paint strip starting with SW 6225 Sleepy Blue through 6230 Rainstorm, or the one right next to that SW 6218 Tradewind through 6223 Still Water. Those both have green undertones which I think is more in line with the Beachum house. As always, buy a few sample cans to test in your own space first to see how it works with your own natural light sources. Good luck!

Yes I love all of the colors. I need help. When you walk in my livingroom you can see my kitchen, my dining room, hall & if you take a few steps you can see my family room. What colors do I use. I also have oak floors & oak kitchen cabinets. Should I use one main color throughout. I also do not have a lot of light. Please help me, I am stressed

    • theharperhouse says: January 30, 2017 at 10:25 AM

Hi Kim – you can definitely use the same color throughout your home if you’d like. Or you can use similar colors by sticking to colors in the same color range on the same paint strip. A good neutral to try would be Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray or Revere Pewter. They are located next to each other in my fan deck – both are good neutrals in the “greige” family (depending on your lighting situation, they can read either gray or tan.) The best thing to do is decide if you’d like your paint colors to be more cool or warm, then buy a few paint samples and put them on your walls to observe during different times of day. Natural light plays a huge factor in how the colors will look in your own space. Never pick out a paint color in the store – the lighting is horrible and no where close to natural. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to determine the exact color Joanna used for that house. In Season 3 she used colors from her own paint line – so to my eye it looks close to her “Shiplap” color. A good alternative to try would be Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore. And yes, from what I can tell on my monitor Behr’s Polar Bear looks similar to White Dove 🙂

Thanks for the boost of confidence in this post! We JUST chose SW Alabaster for the trim color in a newly purchased rental home that we are renovating from top to bottom but are looking for a color or two to paint the walls that would pair nicely with it. Any suggestions? This particular home doesn’t get a lot of natural light. We’ve typically gone with SW Divine White and SW Kilim Beige, but because we are painting the cabinetry and trim and doors in Alabaster, we are looking to maybe switch it up a bit and try something new that’s not as beige but not entirely gray either. Thoughts?

Hi Megan, you can try Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray (which is not gray at all!) or Manchester Tan. Or if you like a color but want it lighter, you can ask your paint department to mix the color at 50% – which will give you the same hue, but just not as dark. Hope this helps!

Sorry, but I don’t offer paint consultation services at this time. It’s just too time consuming and very hard to do without seeing the space in person. Natural light is tricky and even recommending tried and true colors can still look different in a space with limited lighting. Exterior colors are even harder! With that said, I can tell you that we recently painted the flip house Intellectual Gray by Sherwin Williams. It’s a nice taupey gray with brown undertones. And we painted the front door and shutters Urbane Bronze by Benjamin Moore (a nice black with bronze undertones – lots of depth!). Good luck!

I think gray for a fireplace would look great and we actually painted the FP in Mouse House gray last year (although I haven’t posted about it yet – #badblogger, lol) We used Fieldstone by Benjamin Moore and it was a very light gray, but looked great with all the white and light tones in the house. You can definitely paint your FP a darker gray and your walls a lighter gray. I think that would be very pretty! Just choose a lighter gray that you like and then stay on the same paint strip swatch but move down 1-2 spaces for a darker color. For example you could choose SW Repose Gray for your walls and then a darker shade of SW Dorian Gray for your fireplace 🙂 Hope that makes sense!

For my current flip, thinking of doing Repose Gray again, but need a nice white trim color to do with that. Hardwood floors with natural finish (and clear poly), exposed chimney in kitchen…farmhouse look. OR I’m considering a white on white look….and looking for 2 good whites (walls and trim) that would give a hint of contrast but not enough to make the walls look off-white or yellow-ish if that makes sense?? Any suggestions you can give on either paint scheme would be awesome! Thx!!!

    Good evening,
Is it possible to match the Americana egg and the cloudy gray in her colors? I live in a home that was built in 1885 with a fairly dark staircase. I was thinking the Americana egg on the walls and cloudy gray on ceilings. Thanks so much

Hi Corine – it looks to me like Americana Egg is similar to Comfort Gray by Sherwin Williams. I can’t find a match to the Cloudy Gray, but it looks like a soft light green on my monitor? Personally, I keep it simple and just paint our ceilings the flat white that comes in the ceiling paint cans at Menards 🙂 Be sure to get some samples first to test out the color in your own space.

I have sampled the repose grey by SW, but it’s definitely a blue grey? Curious if the gallon will look different. Samples seem to be off on shades. Everything I’ve read is repose is a neutral grey? I’m looking for a soft neutral grey, not dark.?

Paint colors will definitely look differently based on the amount of natural light in the room. If you have a darker north facing space, you’ll probably want to use a warmer gray – SW Useful Gray is warmer with green undertones. I do not think the gallons will look any differently than the samples. Definitely keep trying until you find one that looks good in your space – and unfortunately, the only way to do that successfully is to keep trying samples. Good luck!

I love watching Fixer Upper. I watch them over and over. I am now building a house on the Intracoastal waterway in North Carolina. I am only at the stage of picking out exterior paints, I love SW Oyster Bay for the body of the house. Thinking of going with Extra White for the trim. My house is among live oaks, faces the south, and is lowcountry style.
But, I am so confused as to what color to paint the shutters and doors. Would love some suggestions? I am using Sherwin Williams paints. Thank you.

Your house sounds beautiful and I adore Oyster Bay! I think there’s probably 2 different ways you could go… a dark greenish black could be pretty (similar to this pic like Sherwin Williams Jasper. Or you could do a lighter color like SW Sea Salt (maybe at 50% to go even lighter with more contrast against the Oyster Bay?) Just grab a few samples first and see what you think! Good luck 🙂

150i% Urbane bronze on the whole door ? I painted my door, side lights etc 150% urbane bronze satin hut it does not seem to have as much of a dimension as yours – when. I zoom in on your picture it looks like you may have used a darker color in the crevices .
Did you paint it urban bronze satin and 150% urbane bronze for the dimension In crevices to give it dimension or did you add black? Thank you so much.

        • Christy Harper says: December 3, 2018 at 10:24 AM

Lisa – yes, we used the same color (Urbane Bronze at 150%) on the entire door & side lites. I’m guessing the lighting from the photo is making the crevices appear a bit darker. We did use semi-gloss sheen, so that could make a difference also if you used satin. If you’re wanting a bit more depth, you could go back to your paint store and have them add a touch more black to your color. They are usually willing to remix or adjust colors if you’re not happy. Good luck!

It also might be a good idea to wait until the furniture does arrive before making a decision. Hi,
We are between Agreeable Gray and Repose Gray. They both look so similar, but I think we are leaning towards Agreeable. Our painter is planning to paint the ceiling flat white. He is also suggesting we paint the trim the same color as the ceiling but in semi-gloss. Does that sound good or should we do satin so it’s not too shiny? Also, would it be better to do a softer white like alabaster on the trim?

    Reply
    • Christy Harper says: June 25, 2018 at 1:50 PM

Hi Kyle – both of those colors are great and I think you’ll be very happy with Agreeable Gray (which has a more taupe/brown undertone vs. Repose that has just a hint of purple). I think flat white for your ceiling would be fine since I’m not one to spend more $$ on a ceiling unless I’m specifically wanting it to be a focal point. However, I would be a tad hesitant to use a “flat white” color on my trim without seeing a sample first. There are so many DIFFERENT whites and trim can definitely be a focal point of a room. I would ask your painter for a sample of it (semi-gloss is fine and what I personally prefer for trim) and maybe also try a few other sample trim colors (I’d recommend White Dove & Simply White) then you can compare to your painter’s sample and see which you prefer. Good luck!

    • Christy Harper says: July 2, 2018 at 5:27 PM

Hi Gina, for our Mouse House laundry room we used White Dove (by Benjamin Moore) for the trim. We usually always just use the generic “ceiling white” paint from Menards or a big box store for our ceilings. It’s cheap and does the trick. When I get my paint mixed at the store, if I tell them I want it mixed at 50% then that just means they only put in 50% of the pigment instead of the full amount (which results in a lighter color.) If it’s mixed at 150% they put in 1.5 times the amount of pigment which creates a richer, sometimes darker color. It’s just a little trick that designers use when they like the tone but just want a tad lighter or darker color. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi Jeanette, I think Alabaster will be so pretty on your walls. If you want to keep things super easy, just paint your trim the same color. If you want a bit of a contrast, you could try Sherwin Williams Simply White which is a tad bit whiter than Alabaster. I honestly can’t recommend what to do with your cabinets since I can’t see them in person, but if they are still in good shape you could definitely paint them. Which is something you could do yourself to save some money. Joanna painted her cabinets Alabaster as well as all her walls & trim so you can’t go wrong with that. For ceilings, we always just use the flat white ceiling color you can get in gallons at the big box stores – it’s cheaper and does the job just fine. Good luck!

you could definitely do BM White Dove for the trim if you want – it’s all a matter of personal preference! But I would definitely suggest buying a sample first to see how you like it in your space, as paint colors vary DRASTICALLY based on natural light and other undertones in the room. We personally never use oil based paint as it’s too much of a pain to clean up, etc… but I do believe SW offers a cabinet paint that cures a little harder (can’t think of the name – just ask your SW person what they recommend!) For walls, I would recommend the eggshell/satin finish (I think flat scuffs too easily and is hard to keep clean.) So for trim, I’d just get semi-gloss latex – it’s always worked well for us! 🙂

Hi Jeanette – sorry for the confusion. Joanna does use oil base paints for her cabinets, however I personally don’t because it’s hard to clean out the brushes and rollers, etc… and we’ve always used latex which has worked fine for us. But this is just my own personal preference and I’m not a professional painter so maybe ask your contractor what they suggest. I’m sure they can steer you in the right direction! You can read this post which talks about where we buy our shiplap. And I think we used the 8″ wide boards. Again, that is just our personal preference 🙂

Thank you so much for doing this! I am looking for the wall, ceiling and trim colors for Episode 14 The “Hot Sauce House” I have been searching everywhere for these and I did a search on your site and skimmed the comments and didn’t see. Do you know what these were? I would also love to know what flooring she used and stain color on the island. But I would be happy with just the paint colors.

    Thanks so much!

    Dear Christy,
Thank you SO MUCH for your wonderful blog on shiplap and paint colors. I have read it all probably 4 times! HOWEVER, i’m still in a pickle. i had a lot going on and didn’t think to choose the paint color before I had a tile man just put up some white subway tile. Now Im stuck with “white ice” from Floor & Decor. I would really like to paint the kitchen cabs and all walls Alabaster, as I love this color. Except now I might have to rip out the new backsplash to find a tile that matches better? Do you think Alabaster cabinets and walls would look ok with true white subway tile? Countertops are black granite with some sparkly gold in it. (this was here when we moved in and haven’t changed it). i’m open to Simply White or Cloud White, but don’t want to go too white on the walls. I guess cabs could be Simply White and walls Alabaster or White Dove? Would love any thoughts you have about what kitchen cab paint color goes with true white subway tile. Thank you! Kathryn

Thanks so much for your sweet comment Kathryn 🙂 The best advice I can give you is to run to the store and get a few samples. Spending a few bucks on samples is really the only way to see the colors in your own space, in your own lighting, and with all of the other undertones in the room (tile, countertops, etc…) I definitely don’t think you need to rip out your new backsplash! Although I have no idea what color “white ice” is. Is it a pretty basic white? Or does it lean more blue? The best way to tell this is to paint the sample colors on some posterboard and hold them up next to your tile (in natural day light) If there is not a glaring noticeable difference, then I think you will be fine with any of the colors you mentioned. If I personally had to choose, I would suggest Simply White for your cabs as it is the cleanest white of the bunch w/no undertones. You could then do either Alabaster or White Dove on your walls (both lean a bit creamy/yellow). But definitely get some samples as even the direction/exposure of your room (north vs south, etc..) can change the perception of these colors. Good luck!

    Hi Christy,
We have gutted our rental property. I am planning to use White Dove for doors and trim and Alabaster for the walls. What do you think the color of the vinyl plank flooring from home depot I could use? I was thinking of Chiffon lace or Ocala Oak through out the house with White cabinets and I am not sure what color counter tops I should use too that goes well with the flooring.
Thanks a ton for your help.

    • Christy Harper says: February 4, 2019 at 10:48 AM

Hey Mickey, we have rental properties too and have used the vinyl plank before. It’s a good product that goes down super quick. Your paint color choices sound great, however I think the Chiffon Lace/Ocala Oak are both way too light for flooring (especially a rental.) In my opinion, the Easy Oak, Lighthouse Oak, or Sterling Oak would be much better. You want the floors to be a neutral background for your other finish options. White cabinets sound great and I’d go with a faux marble laminate like this or a gray/taupe color like this. Good luck with your project!

Christy, I am one of the people that buys 5 sample cans of paint to pick a front door color.
I so like the Urbane Bronze that has a photo on 50 Front door colors. On there it says to mix Urbane Bronze 150%.
I had SW mix the sample can and it appears little lighter than the paint chip at regular strength.
I want that rich dark color that looks almost black with the brown/bronze undertone.
Can you suggest something that will help. Do you think it was a JoAnna’s paint instead of SW.
    Please HELP.

Hi Sherrill – I know it wasn’t Joanna’s paint because my hubby is the one who got it and painted that door 🙂 Keep in mind too – that he used 2-3 coats to get that finish so your color will not be as intense if you’re just looking at the swatch they paint on the top of the can. If you’re still unhappy with the color, just go back to SW and have the guys add more pigment – tell them exactly what you’re wanting (deeper, richer black, etc…) and they can tweak it until you’re happy. They are always able to add MORE just can’t take any out 😉 Good luck!!

I don’t use matte or flat because it is much harder to wipe down (and we have 3 kiddos and a big muddy golden retriever who likes to swipe her tail against the walls, lol!) But it’s also personal preference to what you like, so any finish is fine if that’s what you love!! Thanks for reading!!

All the other grays we tried picked up undertones of either blue or green in our space. This one doesn’t. It’s a warm gray. If I had to guess, I believe they were using her Magnolia Paints that year so I would look at the colors Weekend or Signature from her line which you can find here. Of course colors look soooo different on a tv or computer screen than they do in real life, but if you’re wanting a color similar to her look, you can show one of the pictures to the employees of a paint store (Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore) and they should be able to guide you to a similar color. Of course, always get samples first!! Good luck 🙂

Hi Misty, I’m so sorry I don’t have the formula for you as that door was painted over 3 years ago 🙁 I recommend painting a small section on posterboard or a sample board just to confirm the color, as those small swatches on the paint cans can be a bit deceiving (the type of light you’re in will give off a different look as well.) That door faced directly south and received warm sunlight throughout the day, so if your door faces North the color could potentially look different. If you’re still unhappy with the color, you can take the paint back to Sherwin Williams and have them add some brown pigment (raw umber maybe?) xo

Hi Christy, this is one of my favorite articles I have read on your blog! I recently had the cabinets in my home refinished by a local wood refinishing company and they did a great job, but the stain I chose didn’t quite go with the walls or the decor of the room. Rather than getting the cabinets refinished again, I decided to repaint the walls in my home with Sherwin William’s Alabaster. I never would have picked this color if it weren’t for this post, but I’m so glad I did because it was the perfect color for my kitchen and I’m happy with the results!

Hi Christy. I just love your website and all of your colour choices! We are currently updating our house and I’d love your input. We have Sherwin-Williams Navajo white all through our downstairs living areas with Tatami Tan in the study and feature above the fireplace. I’m thinking of repainting all of upstairs (currently builder’s flat browny beige) Agreeable Grey with maybe Languid Blue in the bathrooms. It would bump up against the Navajo White downstairs at the stairs wall. Do you think this would work without having to repaint downstairs the same colour? Would you paint the downstairs bedroom the Navajo White too with a Languid Blue bathroom or do it in the Agreeable grey?
P.S. We live in Texas and have visited Magnolia Farms a few times. It’s so gorgeous and always hard to tear yourself away! <3

Hi Angel, sorry for the delay in responding! It’s very hard to say if your Navajo White will look good against your Agreeable Gray without seeing your space in person. The best thing to do would be to paint a large posterboard with Agreeable Gray so you can see what it looks like in your room with the Navajo White. Personally, I think those two colors may clash a bit – with the Navajo White being quite warm w/yellow undertones. But if it’s only next to it in a small space, it might be ok. Good luck!
