Easy Diy Art in 5 Simple Steps

I wanted to pop in really quick to share how I made this easy DIY art for Mouse House’s photo shoot last week. I needed something to go above the stove, but I wasn’t finding anything that fit my budget or style… so I decided to make it myself. The best thing is it cost less than $10 bucks, and makes a great impact in the space!

——>Also, don’t forget it’s party day! I’m joining my friends Debbie from Chatham Hill on the Lake, and Lisa from The Purple Hydrangea, as a cohost. We’re sharing our Favorite Fives every 3rd Wednesday of the month, so scroll all the way down to enter!

For this project, I wanted something fairly large to decorate the space behind the stove. I was browsing Hobby Lobby, when I stumbled upon this black foam board (size 20″x 30″)It was 30% off $6.99 which was $4.89. And the perfect size to fill the space! If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby, Amazon also offers multiple sizes of foam board. Of course, this would also look super cute on a regular chalk board too.

UPDATE: I’ve been told that you can also find this black foam board at Dollar Stores which makes this an even cheaper project!

STEP 1:

Decide on what you’d like your art piece to say. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I chose the saying “Give Thanks.” I also thought this would translate well into other times of year too. But you could choose anything… a favorite saying, special scripture verse, your family name, whatever.

Then I chose one of my favorite fonts (Isabella Script) and printed the saying in a large size until I thought it looked good and centered on the board. I used 800pt font, but play around with it to get the size that looks best for your piece.

STEP 2

If you have graphite paper, place the paper under your printed letters and trace around them to reveal an outline underneath. I couldn’t find my tracing paper and I was in a hurry so I just used a piece of chalk pastel, rubbing it on the back of the paper then flipping it over to trace around the letters (you could also use a pencil to rub on the back instead of chalk.)

STEP 3

Now take your chalk pen and trace around the outline, being careful not to smudge your chalk outline. Don’t worry, you can just wipe away the excess chalk once your painted piece dries 🙂

STEP 4

Now you can fill in the outline using white acrylic paint. Or you could just fill it in with your chalk marker as well. I found the white chalk marker was soaking into the foam board a little bit and wasn’t quite dark enough, so I decided to use acrylic paint to fill in the rest.

STEP 5

Voila! I wanted to add a little extra so I painted a super simple leaf swash on the ends of the letters. Not perfect, but good enough – right? Now you’re ready to display your super simple (and cheap!) Easy Diy Art. Just throw some command strips or double-sided tape on the back, hang it up and admire your new artwork!
