Oh Chip and Joanna, how we all love thee. How we all wish you could come fix up OUR house. I always knew I had a subconscious desire to live in Texas and their show, Fixer Upper, just confirms that. But while Chip and Joanna may not be able to fix up your house, someone else can. Guess who?

YOU.

That’s right. I said you. Believe it or not, you are perfectly able to give your house some “Fixer Upper” style. And I’m going to show you how.

There are several articles out there in blog land about this, but while they are great at giving you inspiration, I have yet to find one that actually gives tangible advice and step by step instructions. If you’re anything like me, you want to know exactly how to do it. Give me all the juicy details – don’t just tell me to add shiplap or hardwood floors. Tell me how to add shiplap, tell me specifically what floor to add!

So I thought I would start a series. How to Add “Fixer Upper” Style to Your Home : using real tangible action steps! I know that title’s a little long – I’ll have to work on that.

My hubby and I are in the process of flipping a house, and I am incorporating many similar features that Joanna uses: shiplap on walls, hardwood floors, lots of white & neutral paint, tearing down walls, a barn door leading to mudroom, etc… Be sure to follow along in our progress here. Unfortunately, we’re only in the demo and un-photogenic electrical/mechanical stage. But I will hopefully be able to add some glory shots soon.

But back to the series! I thought I would break the series down into these categories:

  • Kitchens
  • Baths
  • Bedrooms
  • Living & Dining
  • Craft & Laundry
  • Exteriors
  • Lighting
  • Flooring

So friends, are you ready to see your Fixer Upper? (cue giant picture of house rolling out of the way)

Let’s get started!

  3. Loving this series and I adore Chip and Jo. Their show is one of the only HGTV series my husband will sit through, he loves goofy Chip 🙂 I’ll be following along.

    1. I know – my hubby is the same way! Chip & Jo not only design fantastic houses, but they seem to have a genuine loving relationship. So much better than some of those other flip shows where the couples just yell at each other. Thanks so much for stopping by Dharma 🙂

  5. Hi Christy,
My husband and I just bought our first home and never having one of my own, I have absolutely NO idea even where to get started with painting. Perusing Pinterest, I came across your blog and have already ready many of your blog posts- thanks for the useful information! I am really anxious about this blog post- do you have updates on all the categories to help give your house the “Fixer Upper” feel?
    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for reading my blog AJ, and congrats on your first home! That is so exciting! If you’re tackling a remodeling project, I first like to put together a pinterest board with inspiration pictures that will help guide my design decisions. Then you can also decide on a budget for your project. For painting projects, you just need to decide on a general color scheme, then buy a few samples so you can see how the paint looks in your particular space with the lighting and undertones of your room. Not sure if you saw my paint color post, but here it is: https://www.theharperhouse.com/fixer-upper-paint-colors/ I am working on an ebook / guide that will help people get organized for their remodeling project and also choose finishes. It will be like a modern farmhouse blueprint. Hope to have it finished in the next month or so 🙂
