Flip House Update: Painting the Shiplap

Today I thought I’d give you all a quick update on Mouse House. Things are really looking good over there! The walls are mostly finished and Craig spent the last week priming and painting shiplap.

we’ll be redoing this fireplace soon too

This past week Craig and his friends also tore the old roof off (as it was starting to rain – fun) and they’ll be finishing shingling this week – hopefully. The new concrete patio was poured in the back. I think I’ve got the exterior paint colors picked out (cross your fingers) and our hardwood floors were delivered! Now I need to nail down final design plans for the kitchen.

The bathrooms are starting to look good too – I’ll be back this week with an update. Thanks for following along!

Check out THIS POST to find out where we purchased our shiplap.

Be sure to pin this for later!

  4. Hi there! The house looks fabulous! We are getting ready to paint our newly installed shiplap and I was hoping to ask a few questions and get some direction, please.
Did you prime your ship lap first? Did you spray the paint?
Did you Alabaster for trim as well as the walls? What about the ceiling?
My house is a small rancher with an addition and I’m trying to choose a color all the way through to avoid looking choppy and smaller…..trying to decide between Alabaster and Joanna Gaines new paint color “Shiplap”???
I want to be able to patina items and grays as well as taupe colors to decorate. I’m looking for a white that’s not warm but not cool either??!
    Please, please help?

        1. Hi – sent you guys an email but thought I’d reply here too 🙂 the sheen of paint used on the shiplap was eggshell (Sherwin Williams). Hope this helps and thanks for stopping by!

          1. I am interested also with some of Laura’s questions. We are building and about to put up shiplap.
Did you prime it first? Did you spray or roll on paint?
Your raw wood had lots of knots but in the pictures where it is painted I do not see any of the knots anymore. We just got our wood delivered and it has a lot of knots in it and we are trying to decide if we keep it or go with a little cleaner wood. Would love your thoughts on how yours turned out.
            Thanks!

          2. Hi Lindsay – We did fill the very large knots/holes with Elmer’s interior wood filler (http://amzn.to/28RG6RG), then sanded those smooth. Then we primed the shiplap with one coat of primer (which covered the remaining knots really well.) We used Zinsser’s Fast Prime 2 primer and the walls just needed one coat of primer and one coat of paint (Sherwin Williams Promar 400 (eggshell sheen). My husband used our paint sprayer to do both coats – but just use a light hand with the sprayer as you don’t want drips or too thick of a coat to remain in the horizontal grooves between the boards. So if you use a good primer, that should really help cover those knots. Hope this helps!

  5. LOOKS GREAT! WE JUST BOUGHT THE SAME SHIPLAP FROM A LUMBER YARD. DID YOU DO ANY WOOD FILLER ON THE KNOTS OR ANY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE KNOTS OR DID YOU JUST PAINT OVER THEM? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!

    1. Hi Kristy – see my comment to Lindsay about the knots 🙂 thanks for visiting my blog and good luck with your shiplap! you are gonna love it 😉

    1. The shiplap was painted SW Alabaster which is a nice clean white. And the trim is Benjamin Moore White Dove in semi-gloss. That is my go to color for trim and really there is a very minimal difference between the trim color and wall color – so if you’re wanting more contrast between your walls and trim you might want to choose something else. The ceiling is just regular ceiling paint in white (flat) from Menards (I believe.)

    1. Yes, my husband just did a quick sand on any obvious rough spots (no need to do a full sanding unless you want to.) I believe he used a large circular sanding block with 120 grit. Hope this helps! 🙂

      1. 🙂 The sheen we used was Sherwin Williams’ eggshell (which is similar to satin) – thanks for stopping by Vicky!

  6. Your shiplap looks absolutely stunning. Can you tell me what size you used? We are planning to use nickel gap, which is a very similar product, but it comes in all varying widths 1×6, 1×8, 1×10. We have 10 ft. ceilings in the room and I am trying to figure which size would be the best visually. My hubby brought home a sample of 1×6 (which the board actually measures 5″ excluding the gap). I am concerned this will look too busy. Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Grace – we used 1×8 boards and the house had 8ft ceilings. I would recommend using 1×8 or 1×10 if you have 10 ft. ceilings. The install would also go a little quicker with the wider boards. Good luck! xo, Christy 🙂

    1. I think it depends on what color you’re using and how much space is between your boards. The real shiplap we used overlapped so you couldn’t see any wall between the boards but you could see a slight gap which showed the the raw shiplap underneath. So yes, I did have my hubby run a small paint brush through those spaces so the raw wood was no longer visible. You can install it and then judge whether the gap is visible and bothers you or not. This was using white paint – however, if you’re using a darker paint, the space will be more prominent and therefore I think should definitely be painted. Hope this helps! 🙂

  7. Hi, a are building a house and doing shiplap in our kitchen, dining and living area which is all open. Do you recommend using the same white for the walls as the trim? We are looking at the same alabaster for the walls. We also at doing white kitchen cabinets, do you recommend a more purer white for cabinets or going with alabaster as well? Thank you! We at having the hardest time deciding!!

    1. It is personal preference whether you want more contrast between your walls and trim. If you look at Joanna’s own farmhouse, she used the same color on her shiplap and trim (Alabaster). It’s a little hard to tell, but I believe her cabinets might also be Alabaster. One thing you could do is use Alabaster eggshell on your walls and then Alabaster semi gloss on your trim. Light is reflected differently with those paint sheens so the semi-gloss trim will look a tad brighter to your eye (even though they’re really the same color). Hope this helps!

  8. Hi!

I just ran across your page today searching for Alabaster on google. I was wondering if you painted your trim and doors with Alabaster or used a different white color? Your home is beautiful!

    1. Hi Lucy – the trim and doors for the house were painted White Dove by Benjamin Moore (actually we used Sherwin Williams paint – but had them color match the White Dove). The sheen we used for the doors & trim was semi-gloss. SW Alabaster was used on the walls. Here’s the link to the Kitchen reveal if you want to take a look: https://www.theharperhouse.com/farmhouse-kitchen-reveal/

  9. Just wondering if you can put the shiplap right on the 2×4 or should you drywall first and then put tup the shiplap. All the pictures look great.

    1. Hi Cindy – for exterior walls, I’d recommend drywalling first. I think that would provide better insulation values and give a tighter air seal. If you’re just shiplapping interior walls, it’s not necessary to to do drywall. I hope this helps!

    1. Hi Kate, we spaced the shiplap boards 1/8″ apart. You can also use a nickel or 2 glued together for spacers. Hope this helps!

  10. We built our house 13 years ago and did pine shiplap walls and polyurethanes them. Now we want to paint them white. Is this possible?

    1. Yes, I believe it’s possible but you’ll definitely want to prime them first 😉 I recommend using a good shellac primer like this one: http://amzn.to/2sKFDxP. We used that primer on the dark pine trim in our house that was poly’d and it worked great! Caution though – it is very smelly so you’ll want to use good ventilation by opening your windows, etc… Good luck!

  11. Hi, your home is beautiful, great job, despite the post title, you don’t talk about actually painting the shiplap in this post (did I miss that?) lol Did you prime or shellac first to stop the bleed through from the knots? What sheen and how many coats? I am hoping to do some shiplap in this color soon too 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Wendy 🙂 We did prime the shiplap (we used a sprayer – much easier!) and we recommend using Zinsser Bin Shellac based primer which will seal the knots and prevent bleed through. We then did 1-2 coats of eggshell paint over that with the Sherwin Williams Alabaster. Hope that helps – good luck with your project!

    1. Yes, we have! I haven’t had a chance to post it on the blog yet, but hope to get the full tutorial up soon. Thanks for reading Jeanne!

  12. Hi Christy,

I want to do trim(casing) on top of the shiplap around a door for our front entry. Since there is gap between the boards and also they might not be cut exactly perfect did you do something do cover it up in the door jam? Does that make sense?

    1. Hi Andy – we didn’t have shiplap around our front door, but we did around the back patio door. I’m not sure what the correct terminology is, but you can just use a small lattice piece or some other thin board ripped down to cover the gap between your door jam and shiplap edge. Then caulk and paint, and install your trim casing on top of the shiplap. Hope this helps!

    1. Yes we did fill the holes with wood putty, then sanded smooth prior to priming & painting. Some people prefer the rustic look and leave the holes (Joanna does this) but I wanted a smoother appearance. Hope this helps!

    1. Hi Kelly – the fireplace from the flip house is painted Fieldstone by Benjamin Moore. I’m hoping to share more pics of it soon 🙂

  14. Hi Christy,
Love your blog and house. I would like your thoughts please. I just remodeled kitchen and family room. I used white dove totally, a fan as you are. Haven’t painted fireplace yet in there but may keep white dove or fieldstone? Now I am moving on to paint foyer, living room and den. I have large cathedral ceilings. What are your thoughts on continuing all white dove or even to use alabaster? We have had the same color, similar to nearly peach for years! Is this too much white? Thanks again for your thoughts. Keep up the great blog! Brenda

    1. Hi Brenda – thanks so much for the sweet comments! Honestly, paint colors are a personal preference so go with whatever makes your heart sing and don’t worry about what’s trendy, etc… With that said, I LOVE white and how it brightens up my whole space so I think you could definitely use it in your other rooms as well (Alabaster is super similar to White Dove so you wouldn’t notice much difference.) However, if you’re wanting a bit of a change you could always try some of Joanna’s favorite paint colors. We used Silver Strand (Sherwin Williams) on the upper third of our vaulted ceilings (bottom is shiplap in White Dove) and I really love the look. Best of both worlds – white with a bit of color. Good luck!

  15. Hi Christy,
Fantastic job! Love that you chose to go with authentic shiplap & the colour you chose. Can’t wait to see the fireplace when it’s done!
What brand of paint sprayer do you use & are you happy with it?
    thanks 🙂

  16. Love this look and starting my kitchen soon! Did you have to do anything behind the range to protect from the heat? Thanks!
